Tech companies are key to Welsh economy’s future, says Shadow Tech Minister

Apr 26, 2024

The next decade will see unimaginable growth in the tech sector in Wales, creating job and opportunities yet to be thought of: that was the message from the Shadow Tech Minister and Islwyn MP, Chris Evans, on a visit to Tramshed Tech, Newport this week.

Mr Evans met local founders of tech and digital businesses, as part of an event recognising UK Tech Week, and gave a keynote speech on the importance of start-up and growing businesses to the economy.

The event also featured the launch of UKTN’s Wales Tech report, which gives an overview of activity in the tech sector within Wales. The report shows that the tech and digital industries employ forty-five thousand people in Wales. It highlights the need for developing skills and talent, increasing incubator space, and increased investor appetite for risk, if the industry is to continue to grow.

Tramshed Tech sites in Cardiff, Newport and Swansea act as a centre for local start-ups in the technology sector, offering them flexible office space, skills workshops, and access to knowledge from other founders.

Chris Evans MP said:

‘It was great to meet Welsh tech founders who are at the forefront of innovation in the sector.

‘Making sure smaller and growing businesses can access support and learning is essential in making sure that Wales and the UK can be leaders on the world stage in technology and digital.’
