Islwyn MP Chris Evans has today attended Cancer Research UK’s event at Westminster, supporting World Cancer Day.
Cancer is responsible for around a quarter of the deaths that occur nationally each year. But progress is being made: over the last 40 years, cancer survival in the UK has doubled.
Improved survival rates can, at least in part, be attributed to research discoveries that contribute to earlier detection and more effective treatments.
Chris Evans MP said:
‘Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer every single year, and 1 in 2 of us will get cancer at some point in our lifetime.
‘We should be very proud of the cutting-edge work taking place in research centres up and down the country, making real progress towards beating this awful disease.
‘Labour’s plan to turbocharge research and development in the life sciences sector will centre on providing stability and certainty so that research institutions can focus on what’s important, which is changing lives for the better.’
