Chris Evans MP urges reflection on freedoms ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day 2024

Jan 25, 2024

Chris Evans, the Member of Parliament for Islwyn, has urged his constituents to reflect on the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day which takes place on 27th January 2024.

This year’s theme is ‘Fragility of Freedom’, and the link between the gradual erosion of freedoms as an early and subtle stage within the ten stages of genocide. The theme also pays tribute to those who risk their own freedom for the freedom of others.

Mr Evans said, “In an increasingly polarised world, it is especially important that we observe and reflect on this year’s theme on Holocaust Memorial Day.

“Genocide is not simple, and it never begins with murder. It begins with the gradual and subtle erosion of the freedoms we take for granted, like the freedoms of expression, religion, movement, speech and to self-identity.

“We must always be alert whenever anyone suggests taking away these freedoms, particularly from marginalised groups. We can never take our freedoms for granted, and we must be willing to protect our own freedoms and those of others from erosion.”
