Islwyn MP calls on the UK Government to help families with disabled children

May 25, 2023

Today, 24th May 2023, in the House of Commons, Chris Evans MP questioned the government on what advice they have for families with disabled children in Wales who are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

Mr Evans question to the Secretary of State for Wales follows findings by Family Fund that 9 in 10 families with a disabled child or young person are struggling or falling behind on household bills.

During his question, Mr Evans told the story of a constituent, a mother and unpaid carer to a disabled son, who is watching every penny and worries about how she will afford energy.

The rise of fuel poverty is an issue the Islwyn MP has raised in Parliament on numerous occasions, including in September 2021, when Mr Evans spoke about the hard-pressed families across Wales facing a rise in rail fares, council tax increases and rising household energy bills.

Speaking after Wales Questions Chris Evans MP said:

‘I know that many of my constituents are still struggling to afford their household bills. Time and time again the government does not stand up for the most vulnerable members of our society, and they are the ones who end up paying for the government’s mistakes.

The time for excuses is over, we need action and for those families with disabled children and young people it could not come soon enough.’
