Chris Evans MP supports the RSCPA’s calls for stronger animal welfare legislation

Jun 20, 2023

Last week, Chris Evans MP attended the RSPCA event in Parliament to hear from animal welfare experts on the critical need for stronger legislation.

The RSCPA event followed the news that the UK Government has dropped the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill and its ban on live animals exports, the keeping of primates and puppy imports.

A recent survey by the RSPCA found that 83% of people think that animal welfare should be protected through Government legislation, with 32% people believing protecting animal welfare standards in trade agreements is a top priority.

Speaking on this issue, Chris Evans MP said:

‘I am extremely disappointed that the Government has dropped the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill. I am pleased that the RSCPA are campaigning against this decision, and I support their important work to improve animal welfare standards across the UK.

I know that animal welfare is a top priority for my constituents and I am pleased that the Welsh Government has brought animal welfare to the fore with the Animal Welfare Plan for Wales 2021-2026.

It is time the UK Government caught up with Wales and ensured the whole of the UK is a global leader for animal welfare.’
