Chris Evans MP supports Deafblind Awareness Week 2023

This Deafblind Awareness Week, Chris Evans MP is spreading awareness of the people with multi-sensory impairment, or deafblindness.

Deafblindness is having both sight and hearing loss that affect your everyday life. Some people are born deafblind, which is called congenital deafblindness. Others can become deafblind later in life, this is known as acquired deafblindness.

Across the UK, it is estimated that there are over 450,000 people in the UK who are deafblind. Sense Charity state that this is expected to increase to over 610,000 by 2035. It is also estimated that Wales has a higher proportion of people who are deafblind than the other home countries with 8.6 people who are deafblind per 1,000 population in 2015.

This Deafblind Awareness Week, I had the pleasure of meeting Sense in Parliament to hear some really inspiring stories about how people are working to overcome misconceptions about deaf blindness.

 

It is vitally important we deepen our understanding of deafblindness and dispel the potential misconceptions and prejudices.’
