Petitions Committee

I am currently a member of the Petitions Committee, which is a committee that considers petitions that reach over 100,000 signatures for debate. This is an excellent way to ensure that the voices of the public are heard in Parliament, and that MPs are responding to the issues that are raised through these petitions.

These petitions vary widely and this allows for the views of people across the UK to be heard in Parliament. From Dog Theft to Decolonising the Curriculum, Football Governance to Childhood Cancer funding, Recent petitions that I have been involved in include campaigning for sanctions to be raised against Chinese officials involved in the abhorrent treatment of Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang region of China and a debate on university tuition fees during the pandemic. By leading these petitions I hope I can speak about issues that are current and matter to my constituents. I am also involved in an enquiry into decolonising the curriculum and teaching BAME histories in schools.
