Chris Evans MP welcomes Ofwat investigation into Dŵr Cymru, Welsh Water and slams £10 rebate as ‘totally inadequate’

May 26, 2023

The MP for Islwyn has today welcomed the investigation into Dŵr Cymru, Welsh Water by Ofwat following a notification from the company relating to inaccuracies.

On 25th May 2023, the Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat), the body responsible for economic regulation of the privatised water and sewerage industry in England and Wales, has announced an enforcement investigation into Dŵr Cymru, Welsh Water.

The case will investigate the accuracy of leakage and performance figures that Welsh Water reported to Ofwat in 2020-21. This follows a notification by Welsh Water directly to Ofwat that they have identified issues with its leakage and per capita consumption performance calculations for that time period as part of its Annual Performance Report assurance process.

Mr Evans has long been a critic of Dŵr Cymru, Welsh Water. During a debate in the House of Commons in April, Mr Evans raised his concerns about Welsh Waters spending on public affairs.

He also called on the UK Government to take action against water companies whose CEO’s receive significant bonuses whilst dumping sewage into rivers.

In September of 2021, Mr Evans called for an investigation into Dŵr Cymru, citing the high prices they charge their customers together with their environmental record.

Responding to the announcement of Ofwat’s investigation he said;

‘For some years I have expressed concerns about the performance of Welsh Water. I am pleased that Ofwat have finally launched an investigation into the company.

We must protect our water and environment from pollution. I know many of my constituents care deeply about preserving our green spaces and it is vital we take a stand. I have also voiced my long-standing concerns about the high cost of bills in Wales.

I have long called for an investigation into the practices of Welsh water, and I am glad that Ofwat is now taking a closer look.

I look forward to seeing the findings of this investigation.

When responding to Welsh Water’s announcement that customers will receive only a £10 rebate, Chris Evans MP said:

‘People across Wales are struggling with the cost of living crisis and worried about how they will pay their bills. I am very concerned that Welsh Water believe that a £10 rebate is good enough when it is simply not. It is totally inadequate.’
