Universal Credit cut will cost millions for families in Islwyn.

Oct 7, 2021

Figures from Islwyn MP Chris Evans reveal that over 6,000 households in his constituency will be hit by the cuts to universal credit. The Governments cut to support will cost households in the Islwyn constituency over £6.5 million a year. The cut of up to £20 a week which will impact 6.2 million families UK wide, including those on working tax credits, came into effect today.

In Islwyn over 2,500 of those impacted are currently employed and over 4000 of the households affected include children.

Labour MP Chris Evans has said ‘This £20 is what enables some of these families to put food on the table. In such financially uncertain times, the government ought to be doing all it can to provide relief and security to families facing financial hardship, not sever their support.

‘Millions of families are relying on this lifeline as we come through the pandemic, and as we face a winter of rising costs.

‘Cutting incomes now shows that the Conservatives simply don’t understand the realities of working people’s lives.’
