Tory sewage scandal sullies Islwyn with over 9179 hours of sewage in just seven years, says local MP

Apr 6, 2023

Over the last seven years, the Conservatives have allowed over 382 days’ worth of raw sewage to be dumped into Islwyn’s open spaces, Chris Evans MP has revealed.

This follows news that water companies across the UK have been dumping sewage into rivers and seas. During the period 2016 to 2022, raw sewage was discharged into Islwyn for over 9179 hours and within 1850 individual sewage dumping events, a damning indictment of the Tories allowing raw sewage to pollute the places in which people live, work and holiday.

Back in 2021, the Islwyn MP raised this issue in the House of Commons, calling out Dwr Cymru Welsh Water for polluting rivers, whilst charging its customers one of the highest rates for water across England and Wales.

Mr Evans has also written to Dwr Cymru Welsh Water on a number of occasions to raise constituents’ serious concerns about the environmental, health and economic impact that sewage dumping is having on the community.

Chris Evans, MP for Islwyn said:

“I know that in Islwyn protecting our green spaces is an issue people care deeply about and preventing more sewage dumping must be a top priority. It is deeply alarming that this Tory government have allowed so much sewage into our green spaces and are refusing to take action.

As we approach the warmer months, I know many people will want to visit the beautiful natural landscapes surrounding our valley in Islwyn. However, the Tories failure to protect these green spaces may put them at risk.

The Government must take responsibility for this crisis and start working to protect our beautiful landscapes, for our generation and many more to come.”
