Shadow Defence Minister, Chris Evans has said the Ministry of Defence needs to get a grip and stop wasting taxpayers money.

After trials for the Ajax were stopped for a second time, Mr Evans said that Ministers must get to grips with the chronic mismanagement that has beset this programme. The Ajax has cost the taxpayer billions of pounds, yet it cannot fire accurately on the move, and is unsafe for personnel to use.

Mr Evans said that Ministers and the MoD have let our armed forces and the taxpayers down in the failure to deliver the Ajax.

Mr Evans said: ‘AJAX is the latest in a long list of projects that are either running over in terms of time or cost.

‘Clearly, the MoD are unable to manage projects on time or budget,  this means the army are not getting the equipment they need and taxpayers are forced to pay ever increasing costs.

‘An urgent independent review by the National Audit Office is needed to report on what the problems with Ajax are, and if they are fixable.’
