Dec 11, 2025

A book authored by the Member of Parliament for Caerphilly, Chris Evans MP, has been shortlisted for an award at the tenth Westminster Book Awards.

The book, The Football Batallions: The Elite Footballers Who Fought in the Great War, has been shortlisted in the Best Non-Fiction or Fiction by a Parliamentarian Category.

It tells the extraordinary story of well-known footballers who served in the first world war detailing their individual war stories and, for those who returned, their post-war careers.

The Westminster Book Awards are presented by the Booksellers Association and Publishers Association. They recognise excellent political writing across several categories, including Best Non-Fiction or Fiction by a Parliamentarian, Best Biography by a Parliamentarian, and Best Political Book by a Non-Parliamentarian.

Parliamentarians will now vote to decide the winner in each category, and the results will be announced on 4th February 2026.

Mr. Evans said, “I am incredibly proud to have been shortlisted in the tenth annual Westminster Book Awards.

“It was a great honour to be able to research and tell the stories of these amazing men who served their country with such courage and sacrifice, both in sport and in war.”

“I look forward to the results in February, and I want to wish all the other shortlisted authors the very best of luck.”
