Islwyn MP encourages people to take part in Cycle to Work Day 2022

Aug 4, 2022

Thursday 4th August marks this year’s Cycle to Work Day and Chris Evans MP is encouraging people to ditch their cars and cycle to work.

Cycle to Work Day aims to inspire people to break their usual commuting habits and travel on their bikes to reduce air pollution and congestion.

The Islwyn MP says constituents know the importance of clean air because of the air pollution recorded in Crumlin. Hafodyrynys road recorded levels of nitrogen in the air which were the highest in the country outside of London. Therefore, the Islwyn MP is encouraging people to take part in making a change by switching to cycling.

Cycling also is a great way to stay healthy and fit and can help to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how active travel can help avoid infection and how being healthier can ward off its worst consequences.

Chris Evans MP has shared the three ways to get involved on the day:

  1. Ride your bike to work – simply switch your usual car journey and cycle to work.
  2. Teach a loved one to cycle – spread the joys of cycling by teaching someone you know how to ride.
  3. Cycle to run an errand – expand the day by getting out on your bike to visit your local shop or visit your friends.

“Cycle to Work day is a great way to get into cycling. There are so many great benefits to cycling including staying healthy and reducing the emissions we put into the air.

The daily commute can too often consist of being stuck inside your car in a line of traffic. Having the option to avoid this is great and I encourage as many people as possible to get involved”

Mr Evans also reminds people to stay safe, remember to wear a helmet and follow all traffic signals.

You can also join a community of other cyclists on this Cycle to Work Day. All the information you need to register is on the Love to Ride website, which you can find herewww.lovetoride.net
