Chris Evans MP supports calls for a Fur Free Britain

Jul 3, 2023

This week, Chris Evans MP attended the Humane Society International’s event in Parliament to launch their new report, Fur’s Dirty Footprint which explores the fur industry’s impact on the environment.

The report found that mink fur had a significantly higher carbon footprint than that of natural and synthetic alternatives such as cotton, polyester and acrylic. The report also aims to address misconceptions that imported fur can be seen as ‘eco-friendly or sustainable’, whilst also shining a light on some of the harmful animal welfare standards and practices.

Mr Evans has been a vocal advocate of animal welfare, having spoken on numerous occasions in the House of Commons on Breed Specification Legislation, banning trophy hunting and ending puppy smuggling.

A recent survey by a group of animal protection organisations also found that 66% of people in Islwyn backed a full ban on fur imports and sales. In the UK as a whole, the survey found 75% of the British public supported the ban.

Chris Evans MP said:

‘I was pleased to attend the Humane Society International’s event in Parliament and I am proud to support their #FurFreeBritain campaign.

There is simply no need to continue importing and selling real fur in Britain when there are more sustainable and ethical options available. A comprehensive fur ban is needed to ensure the UK remains a global leader in the promotion of animal welfare.’
