This March, Chris Evans MP is supporting Brain Tumour Awareness Month.
One in three people know someone affected by Brain Tumours and this month, Mr Evans is aiming to raise vital awareness of this disease to help support Brain Tumour Research’s vision of finding a cure for all types of brain tumours.
Brain tumours are indiscriminate and can affect anyone at any age. In the UK, brain tumours are the 9th most common cancer and according to the charity Brain Tumour Research, brain tumours “kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer”.
Brain Tumour Awareness Month follows the launch of the All- Party Parliamentary Group on Brain Tumours inquiry report into breaking down the barriers to finding a cure for brain tumours. The inquiry found that the current funding system is unfit for purpose and promises of millions of pounds of investment has not materialised.
In Wales, the Welsh Government have been taking steps to better understand how people in Wales are affected by cancer. In December 2022, the Welsh Cross-Party Group on Cancer launched an inquiry to better understand the impact that inequalities, and particularly deprivation, have on patient experience, access to cancer services, cancer incidence and cancer outcomes in Wales.
The month culminates with the return of one of the UK’s and Brain Tumour Research’s most popular annual fundraisers – Wear A Hat Day on Friday 31st March. Mr Evans is encouraging everyone to get involved and wear a hat all day.
