Chris Evans MP for Islwyn is proud to support the UN International Youth Day 2022 and is encouraging people across all generations to get involved in sports.
This year’s theme focuses on intergenerational solidarity and creating a world for all ages. The perception of young people in communities is often related to crime and anti- social behaviour. However, the Islwyn MP is encouraging people to challenge this misconception and get involved with young people through sport.
Anti- social behaviour is a growing issue across the country and within Islwyn. Earlier this month, Chris Evans MP spoke in a Westminster Hall debate, emphasising the importance of tackling the root causes of anti-social behaviour.
Mr Evans spoke about the importance of young people having a place to go and highlighted the significance sports can have on changing lives for the better. Sports have been proven to improve young people’s mental and physical health, creativity and teamwork skills. Taking part in sports also provides a safe place for young people to go instead of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.
UN International Youth Day follows a summer of sport across the world from the Women’s football European Championship to the Commonwealth Games. These events have shown the importance of encouraging participation in sports and developing support at grassroots levels.
Speaking on UN International Youth Day, Chris Evans MP said:
“Sports can be life changing. This summer we have seen the best of sport, from the Lionesses making history winning the women’s Euros to our home nations winning medals at the Commonwealth Games. Now more than ever we should be encouraging young people into sport.
It is crucial that young people have a safe space to channel their energies and avoid becoming involved with crime.
This International Youth Day it is important to focus on how we can support people, young and old, to get involved in sports together and improve intergenerational relations”
