Last night, Islwyn MP, Chris Evans, visited the local karate club, Akai Ryuu S.K.C, to celebrate their recent success in the Karate Association World Championships.

The squad, made up of 27 members, represented Wales and won 19 gold medals, 14 silver and 14 bronze while representing Wales at the championships, held in Poland earlier this month.

Mr Evans visited the karate club to share his congratulations and to recognise the hard work and dedication of the club as they return from the championships

The family run club was set- up by sensei Andrew Lewis and is made up of members of all ages, ranging from 5 years old to veterans. With over 30 years of experience, the club aims to pass down their experience to help children get off the street and into sport and make karate accessible for all, with support for women and for disabled members.

Chris Evans MP said

It was an honour to meet the members of Akai Ryuu S.K.C after Wales placed third place overall at the World Championships.

Akai Ryuu S.K.C embodies the best in sport, with not only dedication and hard work, but making sport accessible and fun for all.

I am proud to have such a great club as a member of our community here in Islwyn and representing Wales.”
