Caerphilly MP welcomes miners pension boost

Nov 26, 2025

The Member of Parliament for Caerphilly, Chris Evans, has welcomed today’s news in the Autumn Budget that members of the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme will receive a pension boost.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves MP, announced that the £2.3 billion investment reserve for the BCSSS scheme will be returned to members.

Mr. Evans had previously written to the Chancellor calling for the investment reserve to be returned, after attending a meeting of more than 70 scheme members at the Cascade Community Centre in Penpedairheol in September 2025.

Mr. Evans said, “I am very pleased that the Chancellor has announced the £2.3bn investment reserve will be returned to British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme members. This is brilliant news.

“Caerphilly has a long and proud mining heritage. Our former miners and coal staff deserve the best possible pension, and this decision by the government should boost what they receive.

“I will continue working with the government on how future surpluses are shared between BCSSS members and the government.”
