Caerphilly MP recognises ‘light in the darkness’ Ukrainian refugee welcome

Oct 27, 2025

The Member of Parliament for Caerphilly, Chris Evans, has today recognised the positive contribution of the Ukrainian refugee community in Caerphilly, and the welcome they have received.

He made his remarks at the closing ceremony of a solo exhibition by Ukrainian artist and poet Olesia Miftahova at Ty Penallta, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters.

The exhibition, titled A Welsh Afternoon, concluded with a tour of the exhibits, musical performances by members of Gwent Baroque, and a reading of Welsh poetry.

Mr Evans had previously written to Caerphilly County Borough Council asking for the Council to host the exhibition at Ty Penallta.

Mr. Evans said: “The warm welcome the people of Caerphilly have given to the Ukrainian refugees in our communities has been a light in the darkness, in what has otherwise been an horrific situation in Europe.

“The message our communities have given is simple. We stand with the people of Ukraine against aggression, and we are honoured to have been able to provide them a home when they needed it most.

“I want to pay tribute to the work of Olesia Miftahova and so many others in Caerphilly’s Ukrainian community for embracing our culture and sharing theirs with us. I am delighted to have two of her artworks for my London office.”
