Caerphilly MP objects to Maesycwmmer McDonalds Plan

Feb 23, 2026

The Member of Parliament for Caerphilly, Chris Evans, has today submitted an objection letter opposing plans to build a new McDonalds drive-thru restaurant in Maesycwmmer.

The planned development, which is off Main Road (A472) Maesycwmmer, would see a new McDonalds drive-thru and restaurant built on the site of the former Maesycwmmer Service Station.

In his letter, the Caerphilly MP drew attention to his and residents’ concerns over increased traffic and highway safety concerns, noise, light and litter pollution, inadequate consultation, and impact on the character of the area.

He had previously written to McDonalds UK and Ireland outlining his concerns in November 2025, during the pre-application consultation stage.

Mr. Evans said, “I am objecting to the plans to build a new McDonalds in Maesycwmmer because unfortunately the harms it may cause will significantly outweigh any proposed economic benefits.

“Many people in the community have been clear that they have serious and reasonable concerns about this, and I agree with them. This is already a traffic bottleneck and it simply won’t be safe for the road to take more. There will also be noise, light and litter pollution from the proposed restaurant.

“I would encourage anyone who has not yet taken part in the consultation to read the planning documents on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website, and submit their comments.”

The planning application (Reference: 25/0888/FULL) is currently out for public consultation until the 26th February 2026.
