Chris Evans, the Member of Parliament for Caerphilly, has said he is ‘honoured’ to have been appointed as a Commonwealth War Graves Commissioner by HM King Charles III.
On 13th May, the Caerphilly MP paid a visit to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) headquarters in Maidenhead to receive a warrant approving his appointment, signed by HM The King. He was joined by the Rt. Hon Tom Tugendhat MP, who was also appointed a Commissioner.
The CWGC has a long history spanning over 100 years. It works on behalf of the governments of the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, and South Africa.
A key aim of the commission is to commemorate and memorialise the 1.7 million men and women across the commonwealth who died during the two world wars. The organisation runs several educational projects and acts of remembrance throughout the year.
Mr Evans said, “I am greatly honoured to have been appointed by His Majesty, The King, to become a Commonwealth War Graves Commissioner.
“It is vital that we always remember and commemorate the many men and women across the commonwealth, and across Wales, who sadly died during the first and second world wars. Future generations need to know and recognise the sacrifices that were made for the many freedoms we enjoy today.
“I look forward to supporting the global work of the CWGC over the coming years to the very best of my abilities.”
Commonwealth War Graves Commissioners serve a term of three years, which can be extended for a further three years.
