Chris Evans will be joining the Labour front benches Defence Team as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey.
The news comes as new Labour Leader, Keir Starmer, finalises his front bench appointments. Also joining the defence team in the Lords is Lord Touhig the former MP for Islwyn.
The Islwyn MP has often used his voice in Parliament to raise the concerns of service members and their families. He has been particularly vocal about the issues of poor service accommodation and fighting for a medal for nuclear test veterans.
‘I am delighted to be joining John and the strong defence team he has put together.
Islwyn has a proud history of service in our military as well as being home to important defence manufactures. I know that up and down the country we are all incredibly grateful for the hard work our service members do, particularly as they work to help in the national effort against Coronavirus’
I know the Labour defence team will be holding the Government to account to ensure they are doing justice to our hard-working service men and women.’
Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, John Healey MP said:“I’m delighted to have Chris as part of Labour’s new shadow defence team. His experience in Parliament makes our strong team stronger still. Chris will be a big asset for Labour as we speak up on behalf of our armed forces and veterans.”
